Sizes run from one gram and one-tenth ounce up through the one-kilo bar, with the one-ounce and ten-ounce bars the most common. Minted bars arrive stamped and often sealed in an assay card; cast bars are poured and rougher-surfaced but no less valuable if the hallmark is genuine. Rounds are privately struck discs of bullion, not legal-tender coins, and trade on their metal. Generic or unmarked bars we still consider, but they usually need assay because there is no trusted stamp to stand behind. Poured or 'hand-poured' artisan bars are bought on their metal once verified, though they lack the instant recognition of a name refiner. We also see pieces sold originally as gifts or novelties — thin stamped ingots and gold-clad bars — that hold little or no solid gold; those get tested like anything else so no one pays or is paid for gold that is not there.
Recognized refiners and why the brand matters
With jewelry the alloy is the variable; with bullion the purity is essentially settled — investment bars are typically .9999 fine, near-pure gold — so what varies is trust. A bar from a refiner on the LBMA Good Delivery list, still sealed in its numbered assay card with the serial matching, verifies almost on sight and moves fastest. Break the seal, lose the card, or present a brand no one recognizes, and the bar has to earn that trust back through testing. The gold is the same; the ease of confirming it is not, and that is the practical reason to keep bullion in its original packaging. Minted bars — struck like coins, with sharp detail and often a decorative reverse — tend to command more recognition than plain cast bars of identical weight, but both carry the same gold, and neither the mint finish nor a design changes the metal content by a grain.
How a bullion offer is determined
Bullion is close to a pure weight-times-purity calculation. We confirm the refiner and serial, verify the bar is what it claims — visual hallmark check, precise weight, dimensions, and for anything unsealed or unusual an electronic or ultrasonic test or XRF, because gold-plated tungsten fakes exist and we screen for them. Assayed purity multiplied by weight, measured in troy ounces or grams, set against the live gold market at the moment of sale, establishes the metal value. The offer reflects that value net of handling and resale cost. As with everything else, we publish no fixed per-ounce figure on the site, because the market changes minute to minute and a printed number would be wrong by the time you read it.
What preserves or reduces value
A sealed, serial-matched bar from a top refiner is the cleanest bullion there is and the quickest to price. Deep scratches, solder marks, drilled test holes or a broken assay seal do not remove the gold but do add verification steps. A bar someone has already drilled or filed 'to check it' can be bought, it simply has to be tested more thoroughly. Counterfeits are the real risk in bullion, not wear, which is exactly why recognized brands and intact assay cards carry weight. Tarnish or milk-spotting on the surface of an otherwise genuine bar looks alarming but does not touch the gold underneath, and it is not a reason to discount a verified piece. The one thing worth avoiding is opening sealed packaging out of curiosity before you sell, since a broken seal only adds work at verification without adding a grain of value.
What to bring or photograph
Photograph each bar face-on so the refiner name, weight, fineness and serial number are legible, and capture the assay card front and back if the bar is still carded. Note the stated weight and count so we can prepare a preliminary range. Do not peel bars out of sealed assay cards to photograph them — a matching sealed serial is worth more than a clearer picture, and the seal is part of what we verify.
