The hardest question we are asked here is not what something is worth but which thing to let go of, because the gold and the watch are usually being weighed against each other to raise one sum. There is a real difference worth knowing. Plain high-karat gold is fungible — a chain or a bangle can be replaced later with equivalent metal at whatever spot is that day, so selling it is reversible in a way that matters. A specific watch reference is not replaceable on those terms; once it is gone, buying the same thing back means paying the market for that exact reference, which may have moved a long way. If you intend to rebuild what you sold, the gold is the part to let go of first. That advice costs us the better half of the transaction and it is still the right advice.

Worth knowing before you sell

Ask whether a given piece is going to be resold as it stands or melted down, and note which answer comes back. A plain chain is destined for the crucible regardless, and there is nothing wrong with that. But finely handworked 24K pieces and complete wedding sets occasionally carry more intact than broken down, and someone who only ever melts has little reason to be the one who points that out to you.
