The co-op structure creates a deadline that catches families off guard: when a resident dies, the unit has to be cleared and handed back to the mutual on a fixed date, and everything inside it gets dealt with against that date. The watches do not have to be. They can leave the unit in a pocket and be sold weeks later with no penalty at all, so do not let the handover schedule decide what you accept for them. We will work to the handover date if you want us to, but that deadline sits on the unit and not on what was inside it.

Worth knowing before you sell

While the original owner is still able to tell you where each piece came from, write it down. Which came new, which were gifts, which descended from a parent, and what year — that is provenance no paperwork in the unit will ever hold, and once lost nobody can put it back.
