The worry we hear most here is whether a watch can be sold at all when it was bought informally and there is no receipt anywhere. It can — a receipt has never been the thing that establishes ownership, and watches with no paper trail behind them are ordinary work for us. What you should know is the order of events. The serial goes against the stolen-watch registries before any money moves, never after it. If a watch comes back flagged we stop, and we cannot simply hand it back and forget it. That is uncomfortable to read, but it is far better learned here than at a table.

Worth knowing before you sell

Write the serial number down and store that record somewhere the watch itself is not, whether or not you ever intend to sell. It is stamped between the lugs or on the rehaut depending on the model. Almost nobody does this until after a burglary, at which point it is the one piece of information that would have mattered.
