What we see in Orange

The antiques trade around the Plaza and the large-lot properties out in Orange Park Acres push the mix here well back in time — manual-wind dress watches, early automatics, and mid-century Rolex and Omega that have frequently passed through two or three general dealers before reaching us.

Orange sellers ask us this

Sellers here often bought the watch at an estate sale or a shop near the Plaza and want to know whether it is genuine. Usually it is — outright fakes are the rarer problem. The commoner one is a watch that is authentic but no longer original: a refinished dial, replacement hands, a service bezel, or a movement swapped in from another example. A dealer on the Plaza prices a watch much as they price a sideboard, on how well it presents. We price it on how much of it is still the watch that left the factory, and between those two methods the gap on a mid-century piece can run to half its value.

Worth knowing before you sell

If a dial looks too clean and even for the age of the watch, it has almost certainly been refinished. That is not forgery and plenty of refinished watches sell perfectly well, but it is the single most frequent surprise on pieces that have travelled through the general antiques trade. Worth asking whoever sold it to you whether it was ever "restored" for display — in that trade the word very often means the dial was sent out and redone.
